Death of my son Alex found in his flat in Birmingham on Saturday May 1st 2021

There was a simple creation in Birmingham as per details below, help with the costs would be appreciated, see our Just Giving page at

The service was at Birmingham Crematorium, Walsall Road, Perry Barr B42 2LR at 2-30pm on Friday 21st May and was led by a representative of the Jehovah’s Witnesses as we believed that would be Alex' wish.

Unfortunately none of the family could get to the service due to accident-related blockages on the motorways.
This is despite at least double the expected driving time being allowed.

It was intended to start the service with a short address and to distribute a short history of Alex’ life, the address was to read:

Good afternoon, I am Eric Ring, Alex’ father, with me is his mother Clare and sister Rhiannon. Thank you all for attending this service following the sad event of Alex’s sudden death, we have been rather overcome by many messages of sympathy and support, which show how much he was appreciated.
The bulk of the service is to follow the standard format for a Witness and will be led by Minister Nathanael Roberts, but before I hand over to him, there will be short piece of music from a TV series that was one of Alex’ favourites, Only Fools and Horses, for us to help remember him.

The short history was to be as below, also viewed as a pdf at https://www.ericring.com/upload/Alexlifetime.pdf

Alex was supposed to be born at home in Salford, Manchester but the intervention of a snowstorm led to him being born in Hope Hospital, Salford.
When he was 4 the family moved to Elland in West Yorkshire where Alex started school. His learning difficulties had become apparent and it was also established that he likely
suffered from deafness, having taught himself to lipread. During his time at school he visited hospital a number of times for the treatment then believed to improve the deafness,
having ‘grommets’ installed for ‘glue ear’ and removal of his adenoids. He received a lot of additional support at school, in particular at the secondary school, where an individual
teacher supported him to pass some GCSE’s. Throughout his life he was very enthusiastic about railways and sport especially football and cricket.
At age 18 the family relocated to Milton Keynes, with Alex finding work from time to time with Age Concern and Morrisons, and he then decided to relocate to Sheffield.
After a few years there he then moved back to Milton Keynes for a short time before finally moving to Birmingham.
The family are grateful for all the messages of sympathy, especially from members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, to which Alex had devoted many of his later years,
and apparently made many friendships.
